RETREATS

Refuge Through Movement

A somatic Enquiry & Dance Retreat

Somatic Enquiry & Dance retreat 17-19th May with Blanche Mulholland, Fred Sugerman and Scott Young in the Scottish Borders

In amidst a busy, incoherent world it's easy to forget that life is a dance.
This is an invitation to settle in deeply... Into the REFUGE of the Deeper Self which abides effortlessly as a witness and participant in the cosmic dance.
Some people make the choice to leave society and enter Ashram or Monastery life so as to take REFUGE and dedicate their life to settling once again in the centre of PEACE.. Very few of us have the opportunity or desire for that though, but we can dance more freely with the currents of life each day, whatever we're meeting in each moment.
As we individually and collectively ease through and RELEASE the excessive stress & tension which is held in the bodymind, obscuring our clarity of soulful KNOWING, a joyful playfulness naturally emerges once again.. Grounded in coherence..

.. So come.. Come and dance your way out of your mental & emotional constrictions.. A slow dance.. Mostly.. With plenty of scope to dance wildly with all the elements we'll be moving with.
This is a full weekend.. All day Friday, Saturday & Sunday so there is plenty of time and space for all of us to find our way into our personal and collective state of coherent Refuge.
It's not only about the weekend though, as you will leave with insight and practical knowledge to deepen your personal daily practise around living more fully in an embodied way, in relation to yourself, other people and the wider external environment.

Fred & Colleen Sugerman (Medicine Dance)

Fred Sugerman is a movement artist and educator, and founder/director of Medicine Dance, a collection of mindful movement processes based in Los Angeles, California, exploring the space between the healing and performing arts. He is informed by mindfulness, a motorcycle crash that almost cost a leg, and a traditional theater and dance education and practice. He runs weekly classes, monthly workshops, movement arts laboratories, facilitator trainings, international immersions, and maintains a home-based studio where he sees folk one-on-one. This is his, along with life-partner Colleen Sugerman’s, 14th year sharing their particular brand of somatic exploration in the UK.

Blanche Mulholland (Somatic Alchemy)

Essentially dance and movement are, for me, a form of prayer or ritual, a way of opening up to our deepest feelings and offering our uniqueness to the collective field in which we are embedded. I work with nature and imagination to support the discovery of authentic movement that is both therapeutic and creative. My approach is deeply informed by the principles of Somatic Experiencing in that it is healing and regulating for the nervous system, as well as expressive practices such as Butoh, Continuum and Authentic Movement. I am a Somatic Movement Educator & Therapist, SEP and guide for those deepening their relationship to the wisdom of the body moving.

Scott Young (Fluid Nature)

I gave birth to Fluid Nature in 2023, aft
er many years connecting with Fred Sugerman's Medicine Dance & diving into his facilitator training retreats. I offer immersion days each month in Fife & elsewhere in Scotland. I've been practising and teaching compassion based mindfulness for many years and also facilitating retreats which are community orientated, with the emphasis on settling into stillness, then relating & co-creating with each other within the Field of coherence. My study of somatic movement/ body wisdom is ongoing and always will be. Mostly supported by music, I love guiding people through the gentle unfolding of the psychic/emotional patterns which grip our biological body, so as to re-establish our natural state of being which is fluid, like the rest of the cosmos.
Last year we shared in a sublime residential retreat at Loch Tay with 23 participants..
This year we're having the 3 days at Traquair Village Hall amidst the soft, rolling hills in the Scottish Borders.
There are options locally for booking a room to stay through the weekend, but I suggest you move quickly as it's a popular destination for people to visit in the Spring.

The cost for the weekend is variable:
£250 for people who can afford to pay this amount.
£200 if you are on a lower wage income.
We have the use of a kitchen and participants will be invited to bring a small offering each day and we shall feast at a pot luck feast.
On the Saturday evening after the dance there will be the option to share in music, singing, storytelling, poetry, telling jokes & whatever else arises from the Creative Self.
Watch this space for more details as we unfold towards the weekend in May...
If you have any questions about the weekend then please feel free to ask me.

You can book your place through emailing Scott at
